CD MANUSCRIT DES URSULINES DE LA NOUVELLE-ORLEANS

$18.00

Before it became the birthplace of jazz, Louisiana was - admittedly for only a short time - under the influence of French Baroque music. Unfortunately only one document has survived from New Orleans and the whole lower valley of the Mississippi to testify to this period: a manuscript copy of sacred vocal music by French and Italian composers.

Now this priceless document is restored to us thanks to the musicologist, Alfred Lemmon and the talents of Le Concert Lorrain, who perform the most important section of the manuscript, devoted to the Louanges de Dieu by the Lorraine composer Henry Desmarest, along with a large number of contemporary sacred contrafacta. Thus it was that New France paid tribute to its mother country, bringing us a new and captivating chapter in our Pathways of Baroque in the New World.
