VICKSBURG
Southern City Under Siege
By William Lovelace Foster
Edited by Kenneth Trist Urquhart

William Lovelace Foster, regimental chaplain, 35th Mississippi Volunteer Infantry Regiment, served with the units assigned to defend Vicksburg against General Grant’s Union forces (May 18–July 4, 1863). In a lengthy letter to his wife, Mildred, Foster describes the siege and surrender of the Confederate fortress on the Mississippi River.
