In mid-nineteenth century America, bird's-eye views of cities were extremely popular. When this view of New Orleans was produced in 1852, the city was the largest in the South and among the largest in the United States. The scene looks downriver with the Central Business District in the foreground, with the French Quarter, Marigny and Bywater in the distance.
