Listening on the Edge: Oral History in the Aftermath of Crisis edited by Mark Cave and Stephen M. Sloan (Oxford University Press, 2014) Oxford University Press has recently released a new book co-edited by Mark Cave, senior curator/oral historian at THNOC-Listening on the Edge: Oral History in the Aftermath of Crisis . The book presents excerpts from oral histories done after twelve world crises and analyses by the interviewers. Additional analytical chapters set the interviews in the contexts of pyschoanalysis and oral history methodology.
Providing future generations with accurate, nuanced historical evidence is one of the primary missions of THNOC. History often contains complex emotion and conflicting perspective, and oral history is perhaps the most effective methodology for the documentation of emotion and perspective. THNOC's New Orleans Oral History Initiative was created by Cave to produce in-depth documentation of contemporary events in our community and to strengthen the historical record of 20th-century New Orleans.

The initiative’s focus has been and continues to be The New Orleans Life Story Project, which seeks to add depth and perspective to our understanding of 20th-century New Orleans. In addition, Hurricane Katrina and the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill inspired two important crisis-related oral history projects. One documented the experiences of local, state, and federal first responders during the aftermath of Katrina, and the second recorded narratives of those involved in the animal-rescue operations following the spill.
